Entry 003 — Small Doesn’t Mean Limited
Wall Walkers may have a smaller footprint, but making every square metre count has helped create more than 65 routes, constant variety, and a climbing experience built around creativity and community.
One of the comments we still hear today is probably one of the first assumptions people make about Wall Walkers:
“It looks pretty small.”
Sometimes people come in and give us a go.
Sometimes they don’t even make it through the front door.
They look through the window, compare us to the enormous warehouse-style climbing gyms they’ve seen before, and decide they already know what to expect.
I understand why.
For years, bigger has been associated with better:
- Bigger gyms
- More walls
- More floor space
- More climbing
But one of the biggest lessons we’ve learned over the years is that those things aren’t always connected.
Making Every Square Metre Count
When we first started designing Wall Walkers, building a huge facility simply wasn’t an option.
We didn’t have an unlimited budget. We weren’t backed by investors. We weren’t trying to become Australia’s biggest climbing gym.
We were simply trying to build the best climbing experience we possibly could with the resources we had.
That forced us to think differently.
A large gym can afford to spread routes across dozens of walls. A smaller gym doesn’t have that luxury.
- Every square metre has to work harder.
- Every panel has to justify its existence.
- Every climbing hold needs to contribute to multiple routes.
From the very beginning, we knew we couldn’t simply build six walls and put one climb on each wall.
People would finish climbing far too quickly. They’d become bored. They wouldn’t come back.
So the question became:
“How do we create more climbing without creating more building?”
That question has shaped almost every route we’ve ever set.
Experimenting, Learning and Refining
Over time, we began experimenting with different ideas:
- Shared starts
- Split finishes
- Routes that weave through the wall differently
- Layouts that allow multiple climbs to exist side-by-side while remaining enjoyable to climb
Some ideas worked brilliantly. Others didn’t.
Even today, we’re still learning.
Sometimes we set routes that members absolutely love. Sometimes we realise a route doesn’t quite work the way we imagined.
That’s simply part of route setting.
It’s also part of running a business.
There has never been a single moment where we suddenly discovered the “perfect” way to use a smaller space. Instead, it’s been four years of constant refinement.
Every week we learn something. Every route teaches us something. Every member gives us feedback, whether they realise it or not.
That feedback slowly compounds.
Today, Wall Walkers offers:
- More than 65 climbing routes
- Weekly route setting
- A MoonBoard
- A constantly evolving climbing experience
All within a footprint that many people initially assume is “too small.”
When Constraints Become Strengths
Ironically, some of our biggest strengths exist because we were forced to work within those constraints.
If we’d had unlimited money from day one, we probably would have built a much bigger gym.
Looking back now, I’m not convinced it would have been a better one.
One of the philosophies we’ve developed over the years is that people rarely remember how large a gym was.
They remember whether they enjoyed climbing there. They remember whether the routes were interesting. They remember whether they felt welcome.
They remember the community.
That’s what we’ve always tried to build.
Not the biggest gym.
The gym people wanted to come back to.
Small Doesn’t Mean Limited
Our size has never stopped being a conversation.
Even today, there are people who look through the front windows, decide we’re too small, and never come inside.
That’s okay.
Not every business is for everyone.
But for the people who do walk through the door, we hope they discover what we’ve spent years trying to prove:
Small doesn’t mean limited. Sometimes it simply means every decision matters more.
In the next journal entry, I’ll talk about what happened after the excitement of opening wore off, and the reality of running a climbing gym truly began.
Because opening the doors wasn’t the finish line. In many ways, it was just the beginning.
Don’t spend your time wishing you had someone else’s resources.
Use the ones you have.
Constraints force creativity. Some of the best ideas we’ve ever implemented only exist because we couldn’t afford the obvious solution.
Your limitations might become your biggest competitive advantage—if you’re willing to solve problems instead of making excuses.
