SAFETY DEMO

Head on In.

Welcome to Wall Walkers Bouldering.  So, Why Bouldering?

Bouldering, as a sport is done for many reasons which vary from person to person.  Some love the short routes and high intensity offered by more difficult problems, others love the general workout and social atmosphere at the bouldering gym, and yet others use it as practice for outdoor climbs.
It is a unique sport, offering multiple benefits.

There have been many studies on the benefits of Bouldering (Bouldering Psychotherapy BPT) and it is generally accepted from this body of work that bouldering/climbing is effective in alleviating depression and anxiety while improving climbers' problem-solving, functional strength, mobility, and flexibility.

One common misconception is that strength is the most important aspect of climbing.  It is not. Brute strength alone will not get you far, a sense of balance and strategy is far more important.  This combined with the varying difficulty levels makes it a great form of exercise for people of all skill levels and physical fitness.
Anyone can do it.

Indoors, bouldering is performed on artificial walls between 2 – 4.5 meters in height, containing several Problems (bouldering routes are referred to as problems).  There are multiple scales for grading difficulty however the one used in Australia is the V-scale (Originating in the United States). Climbs are assigned a difficulty rating from V0 (absolute beginner) to V17 (damn hard) (highest as of now).  The scale is never-ending and continues to grow as new routes are mapped and climbed.

The last major benefit of bouldering is its social aspect, it is an ideal sport to do in small groups or in pairs, trying out a route and bouncing ideas off your friends about how best to solve the problem and conquer your challenge, is, for many people the best part of bouldering.

Climbing has also just been included as an Olympic sport and is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.
Bouldering is an excellent way to take your first steps into the climbing world!

Bouldering is the simplest form of climbing, with no rope, harness, carabiners, or quickdraws.

FAQ

Where Is Wall Walkers?

6 Jones Rd, Capalaba, Queensland.

Why do I need to sign a waiver?

Every new climber to Wall Walkers Bouldering must sign a waiver, this is only necessary on your First Vist.

If you are under 18 years old you will need a parent or legal guardian to sign the document for you.

The waiver is in place to ensure you understand the rules and saftey requierments associated with Wall Walkers Bouldering and climbing in general.

Do I really need the safety demonstration?

In a word...Yes.
The safety demo is a short introduction to our gym lead by one of our staff. This will ensure you understand our gym, the rules, what to do in case of emergency, and how to have fun while keeping yourself and everyone else safe. During the safety demonstration, we will run you through how to climb our wall safely including the safest method for falling to the mat along with proper safety etiquette around the climbing wall. And yes even if you have been climbing all your life you will still need to go through this step. These things are not always fun but they are necessary so please bear with our staff.

Do I need to book ahead of time?

No.
Bookings are not required. Just Rock up and climb your heart out.

Do you support the Companion Card?

Yes.
We are registered with the Queensland Government and support the companion card program.

Do I need to wear clothes? If so what type of clothes?

Yes, yes you do.

When climbing it is best to wear clothes similar to what you would wear to the gym.

They should stretch and bend with you during your climbs.

Is there a time limit?

If you hold a casual pass or membership you may climb all day...if your body will allow it.

What do I need?

Bouldering really only requires yourself, a wall, and a willingness to climb things for no good reason.

At Wall Walkers, climbing shoes must be worn when climbing to improve safety and hygiene in an indoor environment.

Climbers should also consider bringing or renting their own chalk/bag to help improve their grip throughout their climbing session.  Other than that come dressed in comfortable clothes similar to what you would wear to the gym and be prepared for a fun workout!

Is there an age limit?

Minimum age is 7.

All climbers must sign a waiver before climbing and any climbers under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign for them.

The minimum age for climbers at Wall Walkers is 7 however all are welcome to come and watch if you follow the rules and parents provide appropriate supervision for their children.  We are not a daycare centre.

Can i bring my pet?

Dogs are welcome provided they and their owners follow the Dog/Human GuidelinesDog Guidelines.

We love our furry friends however as our space is limited we kindly ask you to call us before bringing in your dog for a climbing session. We will be limiting the number of dogs in the Climbing Gym to a maximum of 3 at any one time.

What if i hurt myself?

So long as you follow the climbing rules outlined in the safety demonstration the risk of serious injury is limited but always possible.

In the event of an injury, all our staff hold current Occupational First Aid Certificates and there is a fully stocked first aid kit on-site in case of any injuries.

What happens if I fall?

Falling is an inescapable part of climbing.

At Wall Walkers, 40 cm thick climbing mats extend 2 m from the most extreme point of the climbing wall to ensure they catch you no matter which climbs you're attempting, this is to reduce the risk of injury during a fall.

All our mats and the wall structure comply with the latest Australian Standards for Artificial Climbing Structures (AS 2316.1.2:2021).

The way in which you fall is also important and every new climber at Wall Walkers will be shown the safest possible way to fall during the initial induction.  This method is in line with the latest Australian Standards as outlined in Appendix E, Safety guidance E.3.2 Accidental Falls.

E.3.2 Accidental falls
In the case of an accidental fall, a boulderer should —

  • land on two feet with knees and arms bent;
  • roll on the mat (landing zone/IAS) to allow absorption of the fall;
  • resist extending an arm to break the fall; and
  • resist landing on one leg.
What is a MoonBoard
MoonBoard Image

The MoonBoard is a standardized and interactive training wall.

It is fixed at a specific inverted angle with each hold and grip placed at the same spacing and rotation, in this way, all Moonboards are the same worldwide and can be rated using the same system.

You can use a free Moon Climbing App to access a global network of user-generated problems and competitive performance rankings.

You can climb problems set by your friends and climbing heroes or create and upload your own problems for other climbers to challenge.

Use the links below to grab the Moon Climbing App.

What is a CampusBoard
Campus board example

A Campus Board is the ultimate training tool for improving power and strength.  These boards help train both pulling power and finger strength, both staples of an advanced climbers toolkit.

While Campus Training is good for building this power and strength it is not recommended for new climbers.  This is due to the amount of force exerted on the joints and muscles.

It takes time to build the body up and prepare for more advanced training such as Campus Training when first starting.
